THE VOSS PAPERS
A Short Story from the Archive

The M.S. Sketch

The Jefferson Library, Voss Court, Hampshire, October 1948

I found it on a Tuesday afternoon in October 1948, in the second year of my residency at Voss Court.

The copy of Frankenstein was where it had always been, third shelf from the left on the south wall of the Jefferson Library, between a 1799 edition of Malthus and a well-thumbed Boswell's Johnson that Sir Philip appears to have read several times and annotated in pencil with observations I have not been able to decipher. The Frankenstein was in better condition than its neighbors, which suggested to me that Sir Philip had read it once, carefully, and then returned it to the shelf and left it there.
