A Note from the Archive
On the Images Used Here
This is a work of fiction, and most of the imagery on this site is fiction too. Some of it is real: photographs of actual objects in the family's possession, or of real places, included because they exist and the story needed them. The rest is illustrative artwork, generated to help a scene along, and it should be read the same way you'd read a book's cover art or an endpaper map, as atmosphere, not as evidence.
None of the generated images are presented, or should be taken, as documentary photographs of real historical events. Where a scene draws on real history (a date, a regiment, a town), the prose has been checked against sources as carefully as we could manage; the picture beside it has not been checked the same way, and isn't meant to be. If a generated image happens to resemble a real photograph in composition or subject, that resemblance is coincidental, not a reproduction of anyone's actual photographic work.
We'd rather say this once, plainly, here, than clutter every caption on the site with a disclaimer. If you're looking at a particular image and want to know which kind it is, you're welcome to ask.
